Para-Badminton is a variant of badminton for athletes with a range of physical disabilities and is globally governed by Badminton World Federation (BWF) which was established in the year 2011.In a lot ways Para Badminton is similar to badminton differing only in classifications based on level of disability of an athlete and matchups accordingly to provide a level competing field for all. Here, the players compete in singles (men/women), doubles (men/women) and mixed doubles.

Badminton requires a complex level of skill and strategy, with agility, reaction times, endurance, spatial awareness and strength are among the many attributes required to compete the game. The sport not only build up the physical competency of a player but also escalates his/her mental health.

In para badminton athletes are grouped/classified into six cateogaries based on the degree of activity limitation resulting from the impairment.

They are as follows:

The assessment of whether or not an athlete complies with Minimum Impairment Criteria for a sport, the allocation of a Sport Class and designation of a Sport Class Status is undertaken by a classification panel. Classification panels include a minimum of two classifiers. Classifiers are trained experts – physicians, physiotherapists, coaches, sport scientists, psychologists, ophthalmologist, and have a complimentary knowledge about impairments and their impact on the respective sports. Classifier’s qualifications and required competencies are determined by each International Sport Federation.
